A new opera debuted on Saturday that should hold appeal for fans of the law from both sides of the aisle. "Scalia/Ginsburg" is a comic opera that is structured as a “counterpoint between the Justices Scalia and Ginsburg,” that contains “clever passages from the characters’ legal opinions and public remarks,” according to the Washington Wire blog. The opera had its world premiere in Castleton, VA over the weekend, but has been in the works for several years. The Wire reports that composer Derrick Wang had to quickly update the libretto in light of the slew of recent notable SCOTUS opinions, some of which contained interesting language by Justice Scalia. (Ahem, “Pure applesauce.”)
Justice Ginsburg was in the audience for the premiere and expressed appreciation for the performance. Other critical reviews have been mixed, according to the Wall Street Journal.
